AISI 4130 is a chromium-molybdenum steel that is in general (aviation) use due to its well established heat-treating practices and processing techniques. AISI 4135 has a slightly higher carbon version of AISI 4130. AISI 4140 is a chromium-molybdenum steel that can be heat treated to higher strength levels or in thicker sections than AISI 4130.

May 04, 2009 · That is very unlike 4140, which is tough, abrasive and hard to machine with a good surface. It behaves very much like mild steel, although the depth of tearing is shallower. Tool life us cut short with 4140----so avoid creating chips that turn color. Once the color starts shifting, the cutting tool degrades rapidly.

Annealed Steel is "softer" than normalized steel and offers higher workability while normalized steel offers a higher strength tolerance.

  24. Cutting .063 4130? [Archive] - EAA Forums

If you are cutting .063 minimum you could get by with 16 to 18 tpi, but if you are also cutting thinner 4130 stock, you should use proportionately finer blades. Otherwise the stock feed becomes extremely aggressive and you will break or strip teeth out of the blade. 25. Cutting 4130 sheet is a pain - Sonerai.net

Sep 17, 2015 · Re: Cutting 4130 sheet is a pain. A common trick is to cut the shape you want in metal out of thick plastic, cardboard or my favorite, thin hobbyshop plywood. Lay the template on top of the metal. Use the edge of the template as the guide and follow it around for a nearly perfect reproduction.

  26. Cutting Through Hardened Steel, Hunker

Step 4. All of the teeth in a hacksaw blade are designed to cut in only one direction, and the most efficient cutting direction is away from the user. 2. Use a bench vise to firmly hold the hardened steel as it is cut. This will ensure a clean cut, and will help to reduce any wasted energy.

Step 3. Once the piece is hot enough, which can be seen as a bright, yellow glow of the steel, you want to quickly and carefully grab the part and place it quickly into the oil or water. Stand back as hot fluids will be ejected. The choice of water will provide hardness. Some results are removed in response to a notice of local law requirement. For more information, please see here.

Cut Speed. Back off from the maximum feed rate the process can support by about 10 15% to avoid any risk that the cut will extinguish, thereby applying high levels of beam energy to a material in its most reflective state. If in doubt, start at a slower rate than you know the process can support.

Just one more point, 4130 is an "air" hardening steel. Moving air alone will harden it after heated. Still it can be annealed by heating and allowing it to cool very slowly. Best not to allow it to get too hot. I have had good results with diesel/motoroil mix as a cutting fluid using cheap chip brushes and frequent dipping. just an opinion mindya Jim
